There is one type of acting role that no actor has ever received an Oscar nomination for, but the 2024 Oscars have the opportunity to change that.
Breaking Down The 2024 Oscars Nominations
In terms of total nominations, Oppenheimer leads the way with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and several acting categories. For second place, Poor Things beat out Barbie with 11 nominations, and Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon came in third with 10 total nominations. The Mattel doll movie managed 8 Oscar nominations, the fourth most for any film. If total nominations are indicative of which film will win Best Picture, which they usually are, Nolan's masterpiece is the clear frontrunner to take home the top prize, especially after winning several precursor awards.
Some of the surprise snubs include Greta Gerwig for Best Director, Margot Robbie for Barbie, Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon, Charles Melton for May December, and Barry Keoghan for Saltburn.
In the Best Actor race, Cillian Murphy should also be considered the clear frontrunner after winning at the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards. However, Paul Giamatti (who won the Golden Globe for Comedy) could be considered a candidate to take the award in the two-man race. For Best Actress, the contest should come down to Emma Stone, who has already won an Academy Award for La La Land, and Lily Gladstone, who made history as the first Native American woman nominated in the category. The winners will be revealed when the 2024 Oscars air on March 10.
The 96th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place March 10 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.
