The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (2024)

Most enemies in our favorite games drop loot, some of it is even useful. But with all the cool items and things trying to kill us in Terraria it can be hard to know which of them are worth the fight.

The enemies below aren't guaranteed to drop their amazing goodies, so you might want to set up arenas to efficiently farm them. And of course, there's always that one item every playthrough that never seems to turn up (like the components of the Ankh Shield), but unfortunately no list can change RNG.

9 Slimes

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (1)

Like the Creeper of Minecraft, or the Beholder of Dungeons and Dragons, the Slime is a universally recognized enemy in Terraria. These (usually) little, mindless gelatinous blobs can be found on the Surface from day one, and even have two bosses of the same species. Of course, the bosses have their own loot tables and farming methods.

For our regular, run-of-the-mill slimes a simple lava trap with a statue can prove efficient and worthwhile, providing players with gel 100 percent of the time, coins and 0.01 percent of slimes will drop the Slime Staff. Rare ores and useful potions can also be found among the remains, and if you wield a Flamethrower then a limitless supply of gel can never hurt. There are five achievements to collect regarding the destruction of Slimes.

8 Pirate Captain

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (2)

To summon a Pirate party the player must have entered Hardmode (by killing the Wall of Flesh), destroyed at least one altar and have at least 200 max HP. Or you could just use a Pirate Map which drops from random Ocean mobs. Unfortunately, sea creatures spawned from statues can't drop the Map, so it looks like another lava trap might be needed.

The usual AFK lava farms won't work here though, as any Pirate Captain that dies will spawn a Pirate's Curse which travels through blocks. A Magic Dagger or some particularly loyal summoned creatures will make quick work of it though. The loot from the invasion is well worth the time, as the Golden Furniture can be sold for a lot of money, and rare accessories such as Discount Card, Coin Gun, Lucky Coin and Gold Ring can drop from most mobs. The Pirate Captain and the Flying Dutchman tend to have the best rates though.

7 Moon Lord

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (3)

Okay, so maybe the prospect of farming the final boss seems daunting, but once you've got the gear and technique down there's no reason not to try! The weapons and accessories only available after killing the Moon Lord are incredibly powerful, even game changing. And if you've ever played Portal then you'll recognize the potential of the Portal Gun he drops every time.

No longer will you struggle amid Martian Madness, no more will the Empress of Light evade your might. There are nine top tier weapons, only one of which will drop with each victory, and there's no guarantee it won't be one you already have. On offer are the Meowmere, Terrarian, Star Wrath, S.D.M.G, Last Prism, Lunar Flare, Rainbow Crystal Staff, Lunar Portal Staff, Celebration, and Celebration Mk2.

6 Wandering Eye Fish

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (4)

All the nighttime events offer their own cool drops and Blood Moon is no different. However, there's a safer way to farm some of the best it has to offer, and that's with fishing. Using a Sonar Potion the player can essentially spawn the mobs they want while hiding inside a makeshift fishing hut. Careful not to reel in a Blood Eel as there is nowhere safe to hide from it, except maybe 50 tiles in the sky.

The Wandering Eye Fish is relatively squishy and doesn't present much of a challenge to players, but it drops most of the exclusive loot including the Bloody Tear to restart the event at 7:30pm tomorrow. The loot chart contains Chum Bucket, Vampire Frog Staff, Blood Rain Bow, Chum Caster Rod, and Money Trough.

5 Everscream

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (5)

By the fourth wave you might be feeling more confident about the Frost Moon event, but just wait for Everscream. This mini boss is the counterpart to Mourning Wood of the Pumpkin Moon event, and it has five of its own unique drops: Christmas Tree Sword, Christmas Hook, Razorpine, Festive Wings, and Everscream Trophy.

For each wave of enemies you get through the chances of cool loot drops increase, until it hits 4:30am and a new day dawns on the night's Christmassy chaos.

Farms for Everscream are difficult to construct, as the mini bosses of this event can float through blocks to get back to eviscerating the player. Setting up an arena for this and other invasions is a good idea, with multiple layers of platforms for mobility and passive regeneration through Bonfires and Heart Lanterns.

4 Ice Queen

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (6)

In the same event as Everscream you can encounter the Ice Queen, if you live that long. Level eleven spawns the hardest boss of the Frost Moon, with incredible mobility and devastating ranged attacks, the player would be wise to bring a Warmth Potion or an Ankh Shield to keep themselves from freezing. Ice Queen doesn't only drop cool gear, but also an adorable reindeer mount and a creepy little pet.

Her loot chart comprises: Baby Grinch's Mischief Whistle, Reindeer Bells, Snowman Cannon, North Pole, Blizzard Staff, and Ice Queen Trophy.

Similar to the Moon Lord, once you've got to grips with the battle and formed your own techniques it becomes pretty simple to farm the Ice Queen for all her lovely loot. Crafting the Naughty Present to begin the event isn't expensive, requiring Ectoplasm and Silk, and you can have another go every night as long as another event isn't happening.

3 Pumpking

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (7)

The big bad of the Pumpkin Moon event is the Pumpking, with a body and behavior similar to that of Skeletron. Like Ice Queen, it will only begin to spawn after level eleven, and more will turn up as the difficulty is increased. The higher the wave the player manages to defeat it in, the more likely of scoring some goodies.

This fight is a little easier than the icy counterpart, as Pumpking doesn't cause any debuffs, but will try to strike with its scythe hands. The same arena as Everscream should be employed, as constant movement will help in avoiding the giant tortured fruit, which can also phase through solid blocks. If successsful you can expect to find: Bat Scepter, Dark Harvest, Candy Corn Rifle, Jack O'Lantern Launcher, Spider Egg, Black Fairy Dust, Raven Staff, Horseman's Blade, and pumpking Trophy.

2 Goblin Summoner

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (8)

The Goblin Tinkerer NPC isn't the only reason to look forward to a Goblin Invasion. Once any player standing near World Spawn has 200HP and the Altar has been destroyed, there is a chance for the Goblin Army to spawn. They can be summoned using the Goblin Battle Standard, made from Tattered Cloth and Wood at a Loom.

Before Hardmode has begun this is a pretty pointless event to instigate, though it may help make some additional gold early game. The Goblin Summoner is the goal, as she has a 16.7 percent chance to drop the Shadowflame Weapons, such as the magic Hexdoll, the ranged Bow, and the melee projectile Knife. Each of these apply the Shadowflame debuff, which is basically purple fire, and can be reforged into some high tier damage dealers. She can do some serious damage with her Shadowflame Apparitions, but as long as you keep moving away from her, she can only use Chaos Balls.

1 Ogre

The 9 Best Enemies To Farm In Terraria (9)

The Old One's Army (OOA) travel across the planes of reality, only to find you peacefully playing Terraria, and then tear you limb from limb. And the Ogre does this especially well. When preparing to fight the OOA be sure to have a reliable ranged weapon, because one direct hit from the Ogre's club, and you're toast.

It isn't all doom and gloom though, as fighting this beast in Space renders his jumping attack harmless, and his Ogre Spit won't slow a player on a flying Mount. You'll need to get past the Golem boss first though, and five waves of the OOA before he'll even spawn, so good luck!

Those who succeed have an 8.3 percent chance to find either an Apprentice's Scarf, Squire's Shield, Huntress's Buckler or Monk's Belt. You'll also have a 6.67 percent chance to find one of Tome of Infinite Wisdom, Phantom Phoenix, Brand of the Inferno, Sleepy Octopod, Ghastly Glaive. Finally you can expect any of the following: Creeper Egg, Ogre Mask, Ogre Trophy.
